Raúl Spank (born July 13, 1988 in Dresden ) is a former German athlete who was active in high jump and triple jump . His greatest sporting success was winning the bronze medal in the high jump at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.

Life

Raúl Spank graduated from the Dresden Sports High School in 2008 and is studying economics at the Technical University of Dresden .

At the 2005 World Youth Championships in Marrakech , he finished seventh with 2.11 m. A year later he was at the Junior World Championships in Beijing with 2.23 m fifth. In 2007 Spank won silver at the European Junior Championships in Hengelo with 2.21 m.

2006 Raúl Spank was third in the German championships in the adult class. In 2008 he took second place at the German Indoor Championships. At the German Championships in Nuremberg in 2008 and in Braunschweig in 2010 , he was German champion in the high jump . Spank was nominated for the Olympic Games in Beijing , where he jumped fifth place with 2.32 m. This height meant for him a personal best and a Saxon state record .

In 2009 Raúl Spank won the high jump competition at the German Indoor Championships. On August 21, 2009 he reached the bronze medal at the World Championships in Berlin with a height of 2.32 m together with the Pole Sylwester Bednarek . On August 29, 2009, Spank increased his personal best at the International High Jump Meeting in Eberstadt to 2.33 m and won the meeting with this height.

At the German Indoor Championships in 2012 , Spank won with a personal best indoor performance of 2.32 m. At the indoor world championships , which were held shortly afterwards in Istanbul, he reached ninth place. He missed the London Olympics due to an injury.

At the German Championships in 2015 he was the first German triple jump champion after a disappointing 2.15 m in the high jump .

He also showed sprint qualities and improved the German youth indoor record to 1: 26.34 min at the German A youth championship for athletes in Sindelfingen in 2007 with the 4 x 200 meter relay of the Dresdner SC 1898.

Spank started for the Dresdner SC . His coaches were the former triple jumper Jörg Elbe and Erika Falz. In 2013 he moved to LG North Berlin , now with Rainer Pottel as trainer. Raúl Spank ended his sports career in 2016. With a height of 1.91 m, he had a competition weight of 77 kg.

Spank works as a process manager for an online mail order company.
