Benedikt "Bene" Karus (born January 22, 1990 ) is a former German athlete .

Life

Benedikt Karus comes from the Lossburg district of Schömberg and initially started in 1999 under coach Gottfried Schrempp for his parent club Skiclub Lossburg, before he switched to LG Northern Black Forest and coach Jörg Müller. He achieved his greatest successes in obstacle and cross-country running . In addition to his two individual titles over 3000 m obstacle in Wattenscheid 2012 and cross-country middle distance in Markt Indersdorf 2015, together with Timo Benitz and Marco Kern , Karus was able to win the German championships in the cross-country middle distance team competition in 2014 and 2015 as well as in the 3 × 1000 m relay in 2014 win. In addition, Karus, who started for the University of Tübingen , is a multiple German university champion in various disciplines.

In 2009 he started at the European Cross Country Championships in Dublin , 2011 at the U23 European Athletics Championships in Ostrava and in 2014 at the European Cross Country Championships in Samokow . In November 2012 Benedikt Karus was voted “Ace of the Month” by Leichtathletik.de users. Since being banned from doping , Karus has increasingly focused on studying human medicine in Tübingen .

Doping case

A doping sample submitted by Benedikt Karus on February 8, 2015 after the Eurocross in Diekirch tested positive for darbepoetin , synthetic Epo that is used in the treatment of patients with diseased kidneys and can only be injected. He was informed of this on March 12, 2015. Although a Japanese laboratory ( WADA -accredited) commissioned by Karus at its own expense tested the sample negatively using other methods, the German Sports Arbitration Court (DIS) was given a two-year ban on August 22, 2016 for a lack of confession instead of the usual two-year ban for alleged first-time offenders sentenced to a four-year ban. In September 2016, Karus published his doping case in the media . Several well-known German athletes such as Anna and Lisa Hahner , Nele Alder-Baerens , Dieter Baumann and Timo Benitz expressed their support for Karus; the NADA was referring not comment because of the ongoing proceedings. After careful consideration, Karus decided against appealing to the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS), among other reasons for cost reasons .
