Marcel Bräutigam (born July 31, 1987 in Ilmenau ) is a German cross-country summer biathlete and long-distance runner .

Career

Marcel Bräutigam is a police officer living in Erfurt who initially started for SV Großbreitenbach , where Peter Knauth was his trainer. He then went on to compete in biathlon for SV Eintracht Frankenhain and in athletics for the Erfurt running club , where he was trained by Dieter Hermann. After the Erfurt running club was dissolved , he switched to GutsMuths-Rennsteiglaufverein in 2013 and trained himself from then on. He was a member of the Thuringian police's sports promotion group until July 2008, summer biathlon was no longer promoted there. He had his most successful year until then in 2009. Groom started at the Junior World Championships in the summer biathlon in Haute-Maurienne , where he was 17th in the sprint and 13th in the pursuit race. At the German Championships in 2008 in Bayerisch Eisenstein , Bräutigam won the mass start title with the small bore rifle and with Paul Böttner and Erik Lahl in the Thuringian relay ahead of Tobias Giering and Christian Moser . At the Summer Biathlon European Championships 2010 in Osrblie groom was 12th in the sprint and 20th in the pursuit. After the Summer Biathlon European Championships, he took part in the Frankfurt Marathon and needed 2:27:46 hours for the distance. This made him the fourth best German runner.

A year later , in Martell , Bräutigam came 14th in the singles and 22nd in the pursuit. With Judith Wagner , Thordis Arnold and Steffen Jabin , he just missed a medal in fourth place in the mixed relay. Furthermore, he was three-time German champion in summer biathlon in 2011 and was also the most successful participant. He won the gold medal in all three small bore rifle competitions - sprint, mass start and relay. During the season he won the title together with Paul Böttner and Niklas Heyser.

2012 turned out to be the best year in a marathon so far. He won the 40th anniversary run of the Rennsteig run in the marathon. He was able to achieve the fourth fastest time ever run (2:38:09 h) in this competition. He also took part in the German Half Marathon Championships in Griesheim in spring 2012 and finished tenth in 1:07:29 h. With the team of the Erfurt Running Club (Christian Seiler and Philipp Willaschek) he also came second. At the 50th RWE marathon in Essen , he was able to achieve second overall place after 2:24:02 hours. In 2013 he was able to win the Frankfurt Half Marathon and the Upper Elbe Marathon (1:07:55 h). He also set a new best time over 10 km in 30:42 minutes at the "Rund um das Bayerkreuz" run in Leverkusen. He was able to reach the peak of his sporting career so far at the Munich Marathon 2013, which was also the valuation run of the German Marathon Championships. There he was with a new personal best of 2:20:49 h German runner-up and also German police master.

In the spring of 2014, Bräutigam also took part in the German Half Marathon Championships in Freiburg and finished tenth in 1:06:51 h. With Christian König and Christian Seiler in the GutsMuths-Rennsteiglaufverein team , he also finished second in a new national record of 3:20:22 h. A week later he led Anna Hahner to victory in the Vienna Marathon as a pacemaker. On May 4th, as the best German and sixth overall, he was able to improve his previous best time by almost three minutes to 2:17:53 h in the Kassel Marathon. At the Cologne Marathon in 2014, Bräutigam celebrated his greatest success to date with second place overall behind the Kenyan Anthony Maritim .

The Graz Marathon in October 2014, which also formed the framework of the European Police Championships, became the highlight of his career so far. There he reached second place overall behind Lemawork Ketema and was also European Police Champion.

With the 26th place in the Frankfurt Marathon on October 25, 2015, Bräutigam became German runner-up behind Arne Gabius . In May 2016 he won the half marathon for the fourth time at the Thuringian Rennsteiglauf.

On March 30, 2019, the 31-year-old took part in the German Ultra Championships in the 50 km run in Grünheide near Berlin for the first time, which he immediately won with 2:51:55 h. This running time also means the second best German running time in the history of the 50 km run and only two minutes above the German record.

He won the 22nd Upper Elbe Marathon (OEM) on April 28, 2019 with a new course record time of 2:22:52 h.

On September 1, 2019, he started in the national jersey for Germany for the first time at the World Championships in the 50 km run in Brașov, Romania . There he was able to achieve fourth place overall and with his run time of 2:49:26 h he came within 20 seconds of the German record. Together with Andreas Straßner and Benedikt Hoffmann , he was able to achieve a new German team record, which was enough to become vice world champion and thus to a silver medal. At the German Mountain Running Championships on September 22nd in Breitungen (Thuringia) he was able to secure the bronze medal in 55:43 minutes.
