The World Championships replaced the 50 km World Trophy Final , also organized by the IAU , the 10th and final competition of which was also held in Doha on October 31, 2014.
At the end of March 2017, the IAU announced that the contract to host the third event in Doha had been terminated by the local host and that negotiations were being held with a Chinese host and the athletics association in order to hold the 2017 championships. However, the event was ultimately canceled, as was the case the following year. The third world championships took place in 2019 in Brașov, Romania .

50 km World Trophy Final
The competition was launched in 2005 as the IAU 50 km World Trophy and was the conclusion of the IAU 50 km Challenge series. The runners had to qualify with performances in one of nine previous competitions. The winner for both men and women was determined by adding the best time from one of the previous qualification competitions and the trophy running time. This method of counting was later abandoned, and the Trophy was a pure final until its end of 2014. In 2008 and 2013 the finals were suspended due to an overcrowded competition calendar.
