The International Association of Ultrarunners was founded in 1984. In 1988, the World Athletics Federation (IAAF) took over the patronage and the 100 km road race was recognized as the standard distance. The IAU is dedicated to the international development of the ultramarathon (ultradistance running) in accordance with the IAAF rules and the promotion of related activities in the IAAF continental associations.

Events

As early as 2010, the IAU organized four main events: 100 km road running world championships , 24-hour running world championships , Trail World Championships and the 50 km World Trophy Final . Regional and continental 100 km and 24 hour championships were added. The IAU also supports the Commonwealth Championships and numerous races around the world. Over the years, over 50 associations and thousands of runners have participated in IAU events.
