100 km road running world championships

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 100 km road running world championship (since 2010 IAU 100 km World Championships; previously IAU 100 km World Cup or from 1993 to 2003 IAU 100 km World Challenge ) has been a since 1987 by the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) under the Patronage of the IAAF -organized ultramarathon competition, which is held as a road race over a distance of 100 km. Since 2016 the world championship has been held in alternation with the 24-hour running world championship .

history

The 1987 event in Torhout ( Belgium ) was still unofficial and was only added to the official count afterwards. In 1991, a team evaluation was introduced in which the three best results of the runners of a nation are added up for both men and women.

In 2010, the event was upgraded to world championships with the approval of the IAAF. In 2013 the event scheduled for October 13th in Jeju-do ( South Korea ) was canceled due to financial problems of the local organizing committee.

So far, German teams have won gold twice (1992, 1994), silver twice (1991, 1998) and bronze four times (2001, 2003, 2005, 2006). So far, the women have won four gold medals (1991, 1992, 1998, 2000), three silver medals (1995, 1996, 2003) and four bronze medals (1997, 1999, 2001, 2007). In the individual ranking, Herbert Cuntz (1989), Kazimierz Bak (1994) and Michael Sommer (2003) won bronze. In the women’s category, Katharina Janicke won gold in 1989 and Sigrid Lomsky won silver, while Maria Bak in 1995, Constanze Wagner in 2000 and Elke Hiebl in 2003 took bronze.
