Run Winschoten

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Run Winschoten is a people's and street run that has been taking place in Winschoten in the Netherlands since 1976 . The main run is a 100 km ultra marathon . In addition, there has been a 10 x 10 km Ekiden since 1991 and a marathon was added to the program in 2002 , which was replaced by a 50 km run in 2006.

history

The run was originally intended to be a one-off event to mark the 60th anniversary of the AV Aquilo association . Due to its great success, it was then carried out annually, initially on one large lap and from 1979 on two 50 km laps. After a few years there were four 25 km laps and then five 20 km laps. A lack of support from the athletes and increasing demands on the organizing club led to the foundation of the Stichting Ultraloop Winschoten (STUW), which reorganized the competition , in 1991 .

From now on they ran on a 10 km circuit in the center of Winschoten with start and finish at the De Klinker cultural center . The success came right at the first event, when Konstantin Santalow ran a world best time of 6:26:20 h. The following year, the premiere of the 100 km European Championships was held as part of the event. The winner was Jean-Paul Praet with the world best time of 6:16:41 h (Praet was previously at the two-year Night of Flanders ran 6:15:30 hours, this time, however, was not recognized internationally, as it the because of apartheid against South Africa had broken the sports boycott and was subsequently banned from its association).

In 1995 the 100 km road running world championships were awarded to Winschoten. Ann Trason won the women's title with a world record time of 7:00:48 h.

In 1992, 1993, 1994, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2005 Winschoten hosted the 100 km European Championships, in 1995, 1997, 2000 and 2004 the 100 km World Challenge and the 100 km World Cup took place here. In 2007, 2011 and 2015 both the World and European Championships were held here.
