Lemawork Ketema Weldearegaye (born October 22, 1986 near Huruta, Ethiopia ) is an Austrian marathon runner of Ethiopian origin. He is a two-time national champion in the half marathon (2017, 2018).

Career

Lemawork Ketema came to Austria in 2013 and applied for asylum there. He had to stay in Austria during the ongoing asylum procedure and cancel all offers from international marathon events.

Winner of the first “Wings for Life World Run” 2014

In March 2014 he won the Vienna Half Marathon and in May in St. Pölten with 78.57 km the first edition of the Wings for Life World Run . In October he won the Graz Marathon .

In May 2015 he started as the defending champion at the Wings for Life World Run and was able to set a new record after running 79.9 km and win this worldwide running event for the second time. In July he finished second at the Rio de Janeiro Marathon after 2:14:23 hours with a personal best in the marathon.

In December 2015, Ketema received Austrian citizenship.

He had set himself the goal of starting the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro for Austria, but could not achieve this with his result in Hamburg: Ketema ran the marathon in 2:16:19 h and the ÖOC Olympic limit for Rio 2016 stands at 2:14:00 h in the marathon.

State champion half marathon 2017

In March 2017 he became national champion half marathon in Graz. At the Wings for Life World Run in May 2017, he was the fastest Austrian runner in the world rankings.

In May 2018 Lemawork Ketema was nominated for the marathon team at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin (6-12 August 2018). There he finished eighth in the individual ranking. He also won the bronze medal in the team classification. In October 2018, the then 31-year-old was again national champion half marathon in Graz.
