Alexej "Alex" Schaf (born April 28, 1987 in Lugansk , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a German athlete of Ukrainian origin who specializes in the 100-meter run .

biography

Living in Ukraine and moving to Germany

Alex Schaf was born in the Soviet Union and grew up in poor conditions in his native Lugansk, in eastern Ukraine. His father died when he was a child. His maternal family was of German descent . In 1996 Schaf's family moved to Germany and settled in Sigmaringen in Baden-Württemberg . Schaf, who spoke no German at the time, graduated from secondary school there.

After graduating from school, Schaf signed up for four years in the Bundeswehr and served a. a. several months as a soldier in Kosovo . In 2008 he began training as a sports and fitness clerk in Friedrichshafen .

Athletic career

Sheep was only discovered for athletics at the age of 15 after school successes and participation in the school sports competition Youth trained for the Olympics . He then trained at LG Sigmaringen under Akki Schmid. At the age of 17, Schaf concentrated on the 100-meter run. In 2004 he was the fastest B-youth in Württemberg with a time of 10.83 s.

From his military service, Schaf organized his training alone and improved continuously. In 2009 he achieved a time of 10.56 s over the 100 meters, a year later he improved to 10.36 s and was one of the ten fastest sprinters in Germany both indoors and outdoors.

The national breakthrough as an athlete came in 2011. At the beginning of the year, Schaf moved from LG Sigmaringen to VfB Stuttgart . He trained together with sprinters like Tobias Unger or Marius Broening and appeared for the first time internationally over 60 meters at the indoor five-country competition AVIVA International in Glasgow . After finishing fourth at the German Indoor Championships in a personal best of 6.70 s, Schaf won bronze at the German Championships over the 100 meters. At the end of July he ran at the national athletics meeting in Mannheim with a personal best of 10.20 seconds. This made him the only German sprinter who met the B standard of 10.21 seconds for the World Championships in Daegu , South Korea . Together with Unger, Broening and Sebastian Ernst he formed the German 100-meter relay, which was eliminated after a mistake from Ernst to Schaf at the end of the run. Sheep remained injured the following year.

Alex Schaf lives in Kirchheim unter Teck and is employed by the Bundeswehr. At a height of 1.77 m, his competition weight is 85 kg.
