from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Athletics Team Championship (English: European Athletics Team Championships , sponsors Name: SPAR European Team Championships ) is a United Nations competition, which as a follow-up event of the since 2009 European Athletics Cup will be held. The first edition of the Superliga took place on June 20 and 21, 2009 in Leiria , Portugal . At the same time, the 1st league in Bergen , the 2nd league in Banská Bystrica and the 3rd league in Sarajevo took place. Germany won the European team championship, Russia won silver and the United Kingdom won bronze.

structure

The European team is divided into 4 leagues: the super league, 1st, 2nd and 3rd league. Since 2009 the super league and the first division consisted of twelve nations, the second division eight and the third division fourteen nations. The division into the leagues was based on the performance at the 2008 European Cup. In 2017 and 2019, the Super League, 1st and 2nd League each comprised 12 teams, while the 3rd League comprised the remaining countries. From 2021 the Super League will consist of eight teams and the 1st and 2nd leagues each with 12 teams. All other teams will continue to belong to the 3rd division.

Descent and ascent

In 2017, only two instead of the three lowest-placed teams will be relegated from the super league, and only the two instead of three highest-placed teams from the 1st division will be promoted. The two best players in the second and third leagues continue to rise to the first and second leagues, while the same number are relegated from the first and second leagues.

In 2019, five of the lowest-ranked nations were relegated from the Super League, the 1st League and the 2nd League. From the first division, second division and third division, the first placed rose to the next higher division.

Disciplines

As part of the competition, competitions in 20 different disciplines take place. Basically the disciplines of men and women are the same. Men and women only run different distances on the short hurdle route.

The disciplines are:

Each nation is represented in each discipline by only one athlete or relay. A simple point system that only takes into account the placement is used for evaluation. The nation of the winner of a discipline receives a number of points identical to the number of participants, decreasing to the nation of the last place with one point.

Rule changes

The most profound rule change compared to the European Cup is that there are no separate evaluations for each gender, but a common result for men and women. In addition, there are rule changes in individual disciplines, which were tested at various premium and permit meetings in summer 2008.

Running disciplines Athletes will be disqualified immediately at the first early start.

High jump and pole vault In high jump and pole vault , an athlete has a maximum of four failed attempts in the entire competition. He is eliminated after four unsuccessful attempts in total or three errors with the same amount.

Long jump, triple jump, discus, hammer, spear and ball In the disciplines long jump , triple jump , discus throw , hammer throw , javelin throw and shot put , the number of attempts remains at four. After the first two rounds, the first six go into the third round. The fifth and sixth placed are then eliminated. The first four then contest the fourth and final round. All distances are counted.

At the 2011 European Championships, all participants had three attempts at their disposal. The best four completed the additional fourth round.

3000 and 5000 meters In the 3000 meter run , the last runner is eliminated after three, four and five laps. This also applies to the 3,000-meter obstacle course . In the 5000 meter run , this happens after three, five and seven laps.

At the 2011 European Championships, this elimination rule was abolished again.

Rules changes from 2010

Some of the new rules introduced in 2009 were changed or deleted in 2010.

  • High / pole vault: After the fourth personal unsuccessful attempt in the competition, an athlete is eliminated. If a jumper is determined as the winner, he may continue jumping until he breaks three jumps in a row.
  • Three / long jump and throwing disciplines: Each jumper receives three attempts, the four best placed one more.
  • Runs: There are no elimination races like last year, all runners are allowed to finish the competition. Over 800 meters you start again in lanes and not on the involute.
  • Sprints / hurdles sprints: There are two time runs that are evaluated together. The composition is based on best times, best times of the season and medal wins at international championships, so that the strongest athletes compete against each other.

Rule changes from 2017

From 2017 the division of the groups will be changed. Super league, 1st and 2nd league will then all consist of 12 teams, the 3rd league will include the remaining countries (approx. 11-12). For this reason, four climbers were determined in Baku. From 2017 onwards, 2 promoted and 2 relegated teams are planned in each of the leagues - currently there were 3 nations in or out of the Super League that were relegated or promoted.
