Samuel Tefera (born October 23, 1999 ) is an Ethiopian athlete who competes in medium-distance runs. In 2018 , at the age of 18, he became indoor world champion over 1500 m.

Athletic career

Samuel Tefera first competed in the national adult championships in 2017 at the age of 17. There he started over the 1500 m and finished in 3: 38.30 minutes. the second place. Thanks to this result, he was able to compete over the same distance at the World Championships in London. There, however, he failed in the run-up as eighth in his run.

In January 2018 Tefera set in his first indoor race ever in Val-de-Reuil in 3: 36.05 min. set a new U20 indoor world record. In March he went to the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham for the first time in international championships in the adult area. He won his preliminary run and was then able to win the final. In July he then finished fifth in his parade discipline at the U20 World Championships in Tampere.

In February 2019 Tefera ran with 3: 31.04 min. a new indoor world record that had previously existed for 22 years. In summer he set new personal bests over 800 and 1500 meters. At the World Championships in Doha he reached the semifinals, but had to give up there.
