route

The start and finish point of the route was on the "The Mail" road connecting Trafalgar Studios and Buckingham Palace on the corner of "Marlborough Road" near Marlborough House . Constantly on this route I passed St. James' Park to the south-west . Initially, the route headed northeast past the Trafalgar Studios. The path circled the statue "Equestrian Statue of Charles I" behind it on a roundabout and led back to the southwest on the almost dead straight street "The Mail". It went past the start and finish point to Buckingham Palace, where the Victoria Memorial was completely circled. So the route led back on the street "The Mail" to the start and finish point. The length of this route was two kilometers, so it had to be completed ten times when walking 20 km .

initial situation

After the reigning world and Olympic champion of 2016 Liu Hong from China did not compete here, the inner circle of favorites mainly included the athletes who had placed behind Liu in the last major championships. These were the Chinese Vice World Champion from 2015 and Olympic third from 2016 Lü Xiuzhi, the Mexican Olympic runner-up from 2016 María Guadalupe González, the Italian Olympic won from 2016 and World Cup fifth from 2015 Antonella Palmisano, the Portuguese Ana Cabecinha as Olympic fifth from 2016 and World Cup fourth from 2015 as well as the Brazilian Erica de Sena - World Cup sixth in 2015 and Olympic fifth in 2016. Yang Jiayu was also to be expected, another Chinese woman who had shown herself strong in the run-up to these world championships in the Chinese domestic area.

Course of competition

August 13, 2015, 12:20 p.m. local time (1:20 p.m. CEST )

The walkers started quickly from the start, especially Palmisano tried to keep up the pace. Nevertheless, a larger group of leaders stayed together for a long time, although it got smaller as the length of the route increased. It got even faster in the second half. At fifteen kilometer a four-man leading group with the favorites Yang, González, Lü, Palmisano and De Sena was in front. The Colombian Sandra Arenas followed five seconds behind. Another 33 seconds behind were Cabecinha and Wang Na, a third Chinese woman.

As the goal approached, first De Sena and then Palmisano lost contact with the two leaders. The final decision was made at the very end. Yang Jiayu won by one second ahead of María Guadalupe González. Antonella Palmisano secured the bronze medal 17 seconds behind the new world champion. Érica De Sena was fourth ahead of Sandra Arenas and Ana Cabecinha. The Colombians Kimberly García and Wang Na finished seventh and eighth.
