Bernd Runge (soccer player)

Bernd Runge (born May 3, 1954 ) is a former German soccer player. In the 1970s he played for BSG Stahl Riesa in the GDR league , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

At the age of 14, Bernd Runge was accepted into the youth team of the company sports association (BSG) Stahl Riesa. After he had become eligible to play for the men's area, the 1.78 m tall midfielder was used for the first time in the first team of BSG Stahl in the 1972/73 season. The team was relegated from the league in the previous season and was aiming for promotion in the GDR league . This succeeded immediately, and Runge was involved in the rise with six league games. Although he was only registered for the 2nd team, he was also used in the league team. In the second half of the 1973/74 season he took the place of the failed midfielder Frieder Steuer and completed twelve point games. Runge played an additional fourteen games with the GDR league team from Riesa II. In the following two seasons he reached the peak of his football career. He was used in all 26 league games and was twice top scorer of Riesa with nine or twelve goals as a midfielder. Handicapped by injuries, he could only play in 17 of the 26 league games in 1976/77 and rose with the team for the second time at the end of the season. Even in the GDR league season 1977/78 he was only able to play in nine of the 22 league games. Stahl Riesa reached the promotion round again, in which Runge played five of the eight games and helped the team to get promoted again. In the 1978/79 season he played another 18 games in the league. He was then drafted into the National People's Army and did not return to higher-class football. Between 1972 and 1979 he had played 99 games in the major league and scored 25 goals. In the GDR league was used 29 times and scored five times.
