The qualification was carried out in two groups. The qualification height was 4.60 m. After it became clear that 4.55 m would be sufficient for the final qualification, only one jumper approached this height, which she then managed (highlighted in light blue). In addition, the final field was recruited from the eleven next best athletes in both groups (highlighted in light green), who had each jumped 4.55 m.

final

August 6, 2017, 7:00 p.m. local time (8:00 p.m. CEST )

The favorites for this competition were above all the Greek Olympic champion from 2016 and European champion from 2016 Ekaterini Stefanidi, the Cuban world champion from 2015 , World Cup third in 2013 and Olympic runner-up in 2012 Yarisley Silva, and the US Olympic runner-up in 2016 and World Cup fourth by 2015 Sandi Morris. Other jumpers with prospects for top placings included the Greek World Cup third in 2015 and European Championship fourth in 2016, Nikoleta Kyriakopoulou, and Sweden's Angelica Bengtsson in fourth place in the 2015 World Cup .

An important jump height in this final was 4.75 m. Seven athletes who jumped 4.65 m were still in the race. Up until then, Morris and Stefanidi had made no failures. Since Silva and the Robeilys Peinado from Venezuela had one failed jump each, the German Lisa Ryzih and the British Holly Bradshaw each had two failed attempts, the Canadian Alysha Newman three failed jumps. Quite surprisingly, five athletes each failed three times at the new height of 4.75 m. Only Morris and Stefanidi were successful with their first attempt. With this, two bronze medals were awarded due to the failed attempt rule. Robeilys Peinado and Yarisley Silva were joint thirds. Lisa Ryzih was fifth ahead of Holly Bradshaw. Alysha Newman came in eighth.

As the competition progressed, both athletes began to play poker. First, Stefanidi mastered 4.82 m. Morris saved her two remaining jumps for upcoming heights after a failed attempt. 4.89 m were now laid. Stefanidi had a failed attempt and then stopped at this jump height to try the next height. Morris failed both of her remaining jumps at 4.89 m and was runner-up in the world championship. Ekaterini Stefanidi then jumped 4.91 m and with this strong performance underpinned her won world title. At the same time, this was a new world annual record and also a new Greek national record. The Greek tried three times in vain at 5.01 m.
