qualification

The Finn Simo Lipsanen retired with 16.54 m in the qualification
His 16.46 m was not enough for the Frenchman Benjamin Campaoré to take part in the finals
For the American Donald Scott, 16.63 m was too short to make it into the final

August 7, 2017, 6:35 p.m. local time (7:35 p.m. CEST )

The athletes competed in two groups for a qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 17.00 m. Since only seven jumpers exceeded this distance - highlighted in light blue, the final field was filled with the following best jumpers from both groups - highlighted in light green - to a total of twelve participants. So finally 16.66 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.

final

August 10, 2017, 8:20 p.m. local time (9:20 p.m. CEST )

American Christian Taylor was the clear favorite for this competition. As world champion in 2015 , he was the defending champion and triumphed at the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016 . Competition for him initially came from his own camp. Will Claye was the Olympic runner-up in 2012/2016 and third in the World Cup in 2013. Another favorite was the Portuguese World Cup third Nelson Évora. The two Chinese, Dong Bin and Cao Shuo - in third and fourth place at the 2016 Olympic Games - did not start here. The German European champion from 2016 Max Hess also had to pass due to an injury.

The competition was not quite as high-quality as the competitions at the World Championships and Olympic Games in recent years, where there had always been widths of more than 17.80 m or even more than eighteen meters. But it remained exciting and tight until the end. On lap one, Claye was clearly at the front of the field with a jump of 17.54 m. He was followed by the Cuban Alexis Copello with 17.16 m, his compatriot Andy Díaz - 17.13 m - and Évora with 17.02 m. In his second attempt, Taylor outstripped his teammate by three centimeters and took the lead. Claye also jumped very far with 17.52 m. Évora rose to 17.19 m and was three centimeters ahead of Copello in third place. The two Americans also dominated in the third round. Taylor reached 17.68 m, Claye improved to 17.63 m. The Cuban Christian Nápoles equalized the 17.16 m of his compatriot Copello after two invalid jumps, so that now three Cubans occupied places four to six.

In round four, the first round of the final of the top eight, there were no changes. The two Americans shone again with widths well over seventeen meters. It was the same on lap five. There were no more changes in the medal ranks in the final round. But after that it got a bit strange. First, Chris Benard, the third American in this final, reached 17.16 m, which means that there were three athletes with exactly this distance. Of them, Bernard had the second best attempt by far and was fourth. But the two Cubans Copello and Nápoles followed suit. Copello scored 17.06 m and surpassed Bernard's second best jump. Nápoles hit the mark of 17.16 m exactly again, which brought him fourth place in the final bill.

World champion became the top favorite Christian Taylor, who jumped five centimeters with 17.68 m than Will Claye. Nelson Évora won the bronze medal with 17.19 m and was three centimeters ahead of Christian Nápoles in fourth. Fifth placed Alexis Copello and Chris Benard in sixth were also three centimeters short of bronze. The third Cuban, Andy Díaz, was seventh another three centimeters behind. Frenchman Jean-Marc Pontvianne finished eighth with 16.79 m.
