final
August 12, 2017, 9:50 p.m. local time (10:50 p.m. CEST )
The following line-up changes were made in the final:
- USA - Jaylen Bacon ran instead of Beejay Lee
- Japan - Kenji Fujimitsu replaced Asuka Cambridge
- Jamaica - Omar McLeod and Yohan Blake ran instead of Tyquendo Tracey and Michael Campbell
Everyone was expecting the duel between the USA and Jamaica that has been common in recent years. Again and again, the Americans had drawn the short straw in this duel, mostly even through disqualification or early retirement. But this time they were slightly favored, because Usain Bolt no longer had the dominant role in earlier years and the Americans had done significantly better than Jamaica in the 100m individual run. The British - European champions from 2014 and 2016 - had also presented themselves strongly in the run-up . Together with China and Japan, they were the first contenders for the bronze medal.
Great Britain started this race strong. With very good changes and individual performances, they led the Americans and Jamaica after half the distance. Also in the finish curve, the Briton Daniel Talbot showed himself to be a match for the American Jaylen Bacon and the Jamaican Yohan Blake and passed the baton to Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake with a clear lead. The US 100 meter runner-up, Christian Coleman, came within half a tenth of a second to the British final runner, but Great Britain could not take this surprising gold medal away and won the race with a new European record. Behind it, there was quite a drama in the last big race of the Usain Bolt. In the middle of the home stretch, Bolt grabbed his thigh, hobbled a few more steps, and then gave up. The Japanese benefited from it and won the bronze medal. China finished fourth, ahead of France and Canada. Turkey came in seventh.
