Shane Brathwaite (born February 8, 1990 in Bridgetown ) is a Barbadian hurdler who specializes in the 110-meter distance . At the beginning of his career he also competed in the all-around competition and in the 400-meter hurdles .

Athletic career

Shane Brathwaite gained his first international experience at the Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships in 2006 in Port of Spain , where he won the gold medal in the eight-round U18 class with 4599 points. In 2007 he took part in the heptathlon at the CARIFTA Games in Providenciales , where he finished fourth with 4409 points. This was followed by participation in the youth world championships in Ostrava , where he won the gold medal in the eight-fight with 6261 points. In 2008 he won the gold medal in the heptathlon at the CARIFTA Games in Basseterre with 5006 points, as well as the bronze medal with the Barbadian 4 x 100 meter relay. Over 400 meter hurdles, he took part in the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz , Poland , and reached the semifinals there. He then took part in the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune and was eliminated there in the first round over 200 meters.

In 2009 he won the bronze medal in the 110 meter hurdles at the Pan American Junior Championships in Port of Spain in 13.41 seconds. In 2010 he took fourth place in the hurdles sprint at the U23 NACAC championships in Miramar and sixth place at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayagüez . In 2011 he finished fourth there in 13.75 s at the CAC championships. In 2012 he won the gold medal in the hurdles race in 13.31 s at the U23 NACAC championships in Irapuato and finished fifth with the Barbadian relay. He also qualified for the Olympic Games in London , where he did not reach the finish line in advance . In 2013 he won the gold medal over the hurdles at the CAC Championships in Morelia in 13.70 s and finished fourth in the relay. With the relay he qualified for the World Championships in Moscow and retired there in 38.94 s in the first round.

In 2014 he retired from the World Relays in the Bahamas with the 4 x 200 meter relay in the preliminary run and he won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 13.49 s. In 2015 he won bronze at the Pan American Games in Toronto and was eliminated in the preliminary round with the 4 x 100 meter relay. In addition, the World Championships in Beijing made it to the semifinals . In 2016 Brathwaite took part in the World Indoor Championships in Portland , where she finished eighth in the final over 60 meter hurdles in 7.88 s. In 2017 he qualified for the World Championships in London, where he finished sixth in the final with 13.32 seconds . In addition, he retired with the Barbadian relay with 39.13 s in the lead .

In 2018 he took part for the second time in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast , where he finished sixth over the hurdles in 13.53 s and finished fifth with the relay. He also started over 200 meters, but was disqualified there in the first lap due to a false start.

In 2008 and 2009 Brathwaite was Barbadian champion over 400 m hurdles and between 2014 and 2018 over 110 m hurdles. He is a graduate of Texas Tech University . He is not related to hurdler Ryan Brathwaite , who is from the same town.
