Providenciales is an island belonging to the Turks and Caicos Islands , which is colloquially mostly just called "Provo". It is the westernmost inhabited island of the Caicos Islands . Providenciales, with its long beaches and coral reefs, is a luxurious tourist destination that boasts 350 days of sunshine a year. The island has an area of 98 square kilometers and is inhabited by 23,769 people (2012 census). The highest point on the island is the 48 meter high Blue Mountain.
Before 1960 Providenciales only had around 500 residents. From 1966, a company received permission to lease state land. As a result, Providenciales became the most populous island of the Turks and Caicos. Provo is now the economic and tourist center of the area. The Providenciales International Airport is the largest international airport of the Turks and Caicos Islands and the only one who is served by scheduled international flights. From here, other islands in the area are approached.
The largest towns on Providenciales are Five Cays , Honda Road , The Bight and Wheeland .
