Fort George Cay is a small island of the British overseas territory of the Turks and Caicos Islands with an area of approximately 30 hectares . The island is part of a chain of small cays in the north of the Caicos Islands between the larger islands of Providenciales and North Caicos . Immediate neighboring islands are Dellis Cay in the north, Stubbs Cay in the east and Pine Cay in the south. Like this one, Fort George Cay is a fairly flat sand island without much vegetation. The eastern part of the island in particular resembles an elongated, narrow sandbar .
In the 18th century, the British built a fort on the island to ward off pirates. In the war of 1812 , the island served to secure the Caicos Islands from the Americans . Remains of the fort and some cannons in the water in front of the island can still be found from this time.
Fort George Cay and the waters around the island are protected as Fort George Land and Sea National Park . In May 2008, plans to develop the island and neighboring cays for tourism were rumored by the responsible minister immediately.
