Big Ambergris Cay , sometimes just called Ambergris Cay , is the main island of the Ambergris Cays , a small Atlantic archipelago in the southeast Caicos Islands .

The island is two kilometers east of its sister island Little Ambergris Cay , but in contrast to this is now inhabited. The settlements are called Astwood Ridge, Bonny Cove, Calico Jack Cottages, Columbus Beach Cottages, Columbus Beach, Hawkins Ridge, Le Grand Cottages, Lightbourne Point, Salt Rakers Cove and Whale Watchers Point.

On Big Ambergris Cay, which has been privately owned for several years , a large holiday resort with a marina and a 1700 meter long runway for small planes was built in 2000 . The private airfield there has been approved for international flights since June 2008.

The name of the island is derived from Ambergris (English for ' ambergris '), a waste product of sperm whales used for perfume production , which was previously washed up there in large quantities.
