doping
This competition was affected by two doping cases.
- The USA team was stripped of the gold medal for proven doping by Tim Montgomery. In 2008 he admitted to taking banned substances while in prison. Montgomery's second place in the 100-meter run was also canceled .
- The French relay team that had been eliminated in the preliminary stages was disqualified because the doped Christophe Cheval , whose result was also canceled over 200 meters , was involved. The athlete tested positive for nandrolone twice and was banned for two years.
Four seasons in particular suffered:
- Australia - The team received its bronze medals a long time late and the runners could not take part in the award ceremony.
- Nigeria - The team could have entered the final because of their semi-final placement.
- Belgium - The relay would have been eligible to start in the semi-finals due to its pre-run position.
- Cameroon - The team had qualified for the semi-finals due to their lead time.
Preliminary round
August 6, 2001, 5:35 p.m.
The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first three relays per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest teams - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semi-finals.
