The SeaCleaners is an environmental protection organization founded in 2016 by the French-Swiss adventurer and long-distance record sailor Yvan Bourgnon . The reason for founding Bourgnon was his personal experience of the dramatic pollution of the oceans during his circumnavigation in a sport catamaran from 2013 to 2015. The aim of the environmental organization is to protect the oceans and seas from the entry of plastic - in particular through the professional collection of plastic waste the mouths of large rivers such as the Yangtze , Yellow River , Indus , Mekong and Nile . In addition, the SeaCleaners would like to draw attention to the consumption and waste of plastic. The SeaCleaners have been accredited as an observer organization by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) since 2019 . The work of the organization is accompanied by a scientific advisory board made up of international scientists from various disciplines.

The goals of The SeaCleaners

The SeaCleaners are committed to the following goals:

  • Education and prevention in order to inform and sensitize future generations about plastic in the seas.
  • Collecting plastic macro-waste in heavily polluted areas before it further dissolves and spreads.
  • Protect biodiversity and put people back at the center of tomorrow's ecological questions.
  • Scientific data collection.
  • Promotion of a sustainable circular economy by proposing solutions for recycling plastic waste at local level.

The Manta Project

With the ocean catamaran "Manta" The SeaCleaners has developed a visionary ship should move very environmentally friendly and at the same time can clean the sea of plastic waste from a size of 5 mm. Completion is planned for 2023. The ship will supply itself with renewable energy obtained from solar modules, wind turbines and hydropower plants. The macroplastic should be absorbed from the water before it decomposes into microplastic and is absorbed by living organisms. The collection system is located between the ship's hulls. The waste should be sorted on the ship. The majority is pyrolytically pretreated on board and converted into energy by thermal recycling . The catamaran can hold around 250 tons of plastic waste before its cargo has to be unloaded in a port. A catamaran should be able to collect up to 10,000 tons of plastic per year. The plan is to use the Manta in the most polluted areas along the coasts and estuaries of the 11 major rivers, which account for 80% of the plastic that enters the oceans.

financing

The SeaCleaners is funded through donations from individuals and companies to cover the club's operating costs and finance the design and construction of the first catamaran. Allianz Global Investors has been won as the main sponsor . An auditing company ensures proper administration and use.
