Burgers' Zoo is a zoo in Arnhem , the Netherlands .
history
At the suggestion of friends and acquaintances, Johan Burgers opened the Faisanterie Buitenlust in 's-Heerenberg , today a district of Montferland , in 1913 , thus presenting his private collection of animals to the public.
The relatively remote location led to the move to Arnhem in 1923 to a much larger property. When designing it, he was inspired by his friend Carl Hagenbeck and showed what was then the first grid-free predator facility in the Netherlands at the opening . Large, open enclosures remained on the agenda in the period that followed.
The zoo suffered a serious crisis during World War II , when many animals perished as a result of the Battle of Arnhem and practically all enclosures were badly damaged. In the post-war period, the zoo was completely rebuilt with natural enclosures.
In 1968 the first safari park in continental Europe was opened here. In 1971 the chimpanzee territory followed and later a wolf forest, open aviaries , a gorilla enclosure, a covered rainforest and a mangrove forest .
Burgers' Zoo today
Today the zoo covers an area of 45 hectares, whereas the actual zoo with 3,000 animals only takes up 18 hectares. A large part of the area is occupied by the safari park , which today, however, can no longer be accessed by cars or buses. Instead, visitors can get a glimpse of the wildlife from various vantage points and bridges.
In a 1.5 hectare hall there is a walkable rainforest with the corresponding flora and fauna. Desert is the name of an area based on the North American subtropical Sonoran Desert . Another attraction is the Ocean , opened in 2000 , a salt water system made up of eleven pools with a total of 8,000,000 liters, in which visitors can get an insight into the underwater world through a 20 × 5 × 0.35 m glass pane . There is also a mangrove hall. It was built as a prototype for Burgers' Bush. After completion, it was converted into a mangrove hall. The newest attraction is Burgers' Mangrove . Here you can see fiddler crabs, manatees and various butterflies.
