According to newspaper reports, the hand-raised gorilla in the Berlin Zoological Garden wanted to defend his territory after the visitor had stared at him at the enclosure almost every day for a long period of time.

history

The entrance gate of the first Rotterdam zoo was in the hall of the Louwman Museum in Raamsdonksveer until 2009

The Rotterdam Zoo was founded as a private facility for keeping exotic birds in the mid-19th century by two employees of the Dutch Railways . They were soon joined by other Deutsche Bahn employees. Interested people from Rotterdam could finally become members of the small zoo for 10 guilders. The tamer and menagerist Henri Martin , who was very well known at the time, acted in an advisory capacity in the development of the zoo. In 1857 Martin became the zoo's first director. The first zoo was located near the Delftsche Poort train station at what is now the city's main train station . The street name Diergaardesingel still reminds of the former location.

The first park was designed by the company JD en LP Zocher of the garden and landscape architect Jan David Zocher and his son Louis P. The facility was expanded in 1876 based on designs by Dirk Wattez .

In 1938 Sybold van Ravesteyn was commissioned to design a new zoo at a new location in Blijdorp. This facility, still in use today, was built between 1939 and 1941.

During the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940 , the old zoo was destroyed before the new facilities were occupied. In December 1940 the northern part of the park in Blijdorp was opened, and in April 1941 the entire facility could be used. For the first time, anyone could visit the zoo for a fee, which was previously only open to members. Numerous artists were involved in the design of the park, including Dick Elffers .

The remaining facilities of the old zoo were dismantled to make room for new urban planning. Only the wrought-iron entrance gate remained. It came into the possession of the Louwman family who used it in their Wassenaar animal park. After it was closed in 1985, the gate, protected from the weather, was installed in the hall of the Louwman Museum in Raamsdonksveer and was accessible there until the museum was relocated in 2009.

location

The zoo is located in the Rotterdam-Noord district in Wijk Blijdorp. It is located on a fan-shaped area, near the railway line Amsterdam-Rotterdam between the Van Aerssenlaan and the northern adjacent Vroesenpark .
