The bird park Avifauna is a large bird park in Alphen aan den Rijn in the Netherlands .

The name Avifauna is derived from the park's population, which consists mainly of birds . The Avifauna bird park was founded in 1949 and is one of the most visited bird parks in the world.

In the park there is a large pond, a restaurant and a children's playground with a large slide.

History of the park

In August 1949, the then mayor of Alphen aan den Rijn, Mr. Van den Brink, the owner of the Ten Rhijn estate, persuaded the garden behind his house to open up to interested villagers. People were so excited about this private collection of different birds that Van den Brink decided to open a bird park there. On May 17, 1950, the time had come and the park opened its doors to the public.

A toucan was shown on the advertising posters for the opening . Since this was very well received by the public, it was decided to make it the heraldic animal of the bird park. The Van der Valk family , who took over the park in 1956, also kept the toucan as a heraldic animal and even took it over for their hotels and restaurants. Today's restaurant is located in the former home of the Van den Brink family. The park has been run by a foundation since 2012, and the Van der Valk family continue to run the restaurant and hotel.

Livestock

Some of the birds residing in the bird park today are descendants of the first stocking or descend from them. The pelicans are one of them.

Since 2002 part of the Brazilian bird fauna has been reproduced and some of the bird species resident in the Pantanal have been successfully kept.

A new area was recently opened, on which u. a. the largest group of Cuban flamingos can be seen in Europe.

The park is considered a professional authority on the keeping and breeding of hornbills beyond the borders of the Netherlands.

Projects

The Avifauna Bird Park is a member of the NVD and EAZA and supports various nature conservation projects in the Philippines .
