Barbary macaques in Apenheul

Apenheul ( German  Affenheim ) is a medium-sized zoo specializing in primates in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands .

It was founded on July 12, 1971 by Wim Mager, starting with just a few species of monkeys, today there are over 30 different species to be seen in Apenheul. The animals are housed without bars; Bonobos and gorillas inhabit their own islands in large groups, while smaller species such as ring-tailed lemurs , squirrel monkeys and barbary macaques live in accessible enclosures where visitors can get close to the animals. For orangutans there is a facility with a spacious climbing garden made of ropes and wooden beams. From summer 2011 to 2015, three male proboscis monkeys were kept. Apenheul was the only zoo outside of Asia that kept this species at the time.

The keeping of the animals is considered exemplary, many other zoos later adopted elements from Apenheul, for example the walk-in monkey enclosures in which humans and animals meet, and the keeping of great apes on islands separated by wide moats. In a small amphitheater you can watch the gorillas being fed several times a day; this show is designed to be entertaining, but focuses on information about the animals.

In addition to primates, there are also representatives of other animal orders in Apenheul, for example capybaras and mongooses , as well as a petting zoo, which is modeled on a farm in Indonesia , and various water birds.
