The Schadow-Gymnasium (until 2003: Schadow-Oberschule ) is a high school in Berlin named after the Prussian sculptor and graphic artist Johann Gottfried Schadow . It is the oldest grammar school in the Zehlendorf district .
The main focus of the school is on linguistic and scientific subjects. Since the beginning of the 1999/2000 school year, grade 5 pupils have also been taught. From the 2004/2005 school year there are two 5th grades every year.
The Schadow Gymnasium has two parallel classes in grades 5 and 6, and currently even five to six in grades seven to ten. A total of around 1150 students are taught at the Schadow Gymnasium.
history
After the establishment of the Zehlendorfer Gymnasium (1895) and the Zehlendorfer Oberrealschule (Beucke Realschule) , both institutions were combined to form today's Schadow Gymnasium.
The school building was designed by the architect Paul Mebes (1872–1938), for whom a plaque is attached to the school. The building, which was completed in 1914 and is now a listed building, was one of Mebe's first large-scale structures. Although the house with Ionic columns and Doric porticos is in the classical tradition of the Schinkel School , it also shows the master builder's efforts to leave the monumental buildings of the Wilhelmine era behind. On the gable there are sculptures by Luther, Goethe and Bismarck by the Zehlendorf sculptor Walter Schmarje .
In 2014, the Zehlendorfer Gymnasium took over the building of the neighboring - previously closed - Beucke-Oberschule (today Gail S. Halvorsen School in Dahlem).
