Donato Sabia

Donato Sabia (born September 11, 1963 in Potenza ; † April 7, 2020 ibid) was an Italian athlete who specialized in sprinting and middle-distance running.

Life

At the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983 he was eliminated over 800 m in the preliminary run and came in fifth with the Italian team in the 4 x 400 meter relay .

In 1984 he won gold over 800 m at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Gothenburg . At the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , he was fifth over 800 m and reached the semi-finals in the 4 x 400 meter relay . Also over 800 m he was seventh at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul .

He was Italian champion over 800 m three times (1983, 1984, 1988) and once over 400 m (1984). In 1984 and 1989 he won the national title over 400 m indoors.

He died in April 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic at the Ospedale San Carlo in Potenza as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
