Stephan Niklaus

Stephan Niklaus (born April 17, 1958 ) is a former Swiss athlete who specialized in the decathlon . His best performance, achieved in 1983, means to this day (2020) the Swiss record in this discipline.

In 1980 at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Niklaus was twelfth with 7762 points (= 7721 points according to the 1985 ranking that is valid today). At the World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 Niklaus finished fifth with 8212 points (= 8207 points).

At the Swiss Athletics Championships in 1983 he won the title in the 100-meter run, in 1981, 1982 and 1983 he was champion in the decathlon. From 1981 to 1983 he improved the Swiss decathlon record five times, he was the first Swiss decathlete to surpass the 8000 point mark. On July 2 and 3, 1983, he set his personal best in Lausanne with 8337 points, which were changed to 8334 points after the points were scored in 1985.

With a height of 1.89 m, his competition weight was 90 kg. His parent club is the Basel Athletics Club (LCB). He has been running a fitness studio in the Basel area since 1988 .
