Ryszard Katus (born March 29, 1947 in Boska Wola ) is a former Polish athlete . The 1.84 m tall and 81 kg heavy Katus won the 1972 Olympic bronze medal in the decathlon .

Career

At the European Championships in Helsinki in 1971 , Katus finished 14th with 7417 points. The following year at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Katus was in fourth place before the final 1500-meter run, with 7984 points he finally won bronze behind Mykola Awilow (with a world record) and Leonid Lytwynenko , who with 4: 05.9 Minutes from eighth to second place. In September 1973 the final of the first European Cup of all-around fighters was held in Bonn . In the individual standings, the Swede Lennart Hedmark won ahead of the French Yves LeRoy . Katus was sixth with 7836 points, but won the European Cup together with Ryszard Skowronek and Tadeusz Janczenko .

At the European Championships in Rome in 1974 , Katus reached 7920 points and was fifth, but was over 200 points behind bronze. In the decathlon at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Katus reached 7616 points and finished twelfth.

Katus was Polish champion in 1974, 1975 and 1978. He started for Gwardia Warsaw.
