Hansjörg Wirz

Hansjörg Wirz (born June 9, 1943 ) is a former Swiss athlete . From 1999 to 2015 he was President of the European Athletic Association , the European athletics federation.

Hansjörg Wirz won the Swiss Championships in the 400-meter hurdles in 1968, 1969 and 1972. At the European Championships in Athens in 1969 , he finished fourth in 50.8 seconds, and at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich he was eliminated in the preliminary run out. In 1968, Wirz set his first Swiss national record in 50.8 seconds wearing the Stade Lausanne jersey, improving Bruno Galliker's eight-year-old best . Starting for the LC Schaffhausen , he improved the record in 1969 to 50.7 seconds. His electronic best of 50.78 s, which Wirz ran in Zurich in 1972, was beaten by Heinz Hofer in 1973 as the Swiss record .

During his career, Wirz completed his studies with degrees in marketing and management and worked in sports marketing for the next few decades. He also worked as the national hurdles trainer for Switzerland and as the technical director of the Swiss Athletics Federation . From 1994 to 2000 he was Chef de Mission of the Swiss Olympic team, from 2000 to 2006 Wirz was the meeting director of the Weltklasse Zürich sports festival .

Wirz has been a member of the Council of the European Athletic Association since 1991 , from 1995 he was treasurer of the EAA, from 1999 to 2015 he was its president. Wirz has also been a representative of Europe on the Council of the International Association of Athletics Federations since 1999 .
