Iwo Balabanow ( Bulgarian Иво Балабанов , English transcription Ivo Balabanov; born February 21, 1997 ) is a Bulgarian medium and long-distance runner who also competes in the obstacle course .

Athletic career

Iwo Balabanow gained his first international experience in 2013 when he finished seventh in the 2000-meter obstacle course in 6: 10.92 min at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Utrecht . The following year he took part in the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing over this distance , where he also finished seventh in 5: 49.64 minutes. In 2015 he finished sixth at the Junior European Championships in Eskilstuna in 9: 08.16 minutes and the following year he could not finish his prelim at the U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz . In 2017 he was eliminated from the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz with 9: 18.10 minutes in the preliminary round and in 2018 he took part in the European Championships in Berlin for the first time , but did not make it to the final with 8: 51.52 minutes. In 2019 he started at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in the 3000 meter run , but could not qualify for the final with 8: 20.31 min. He then finished fourth in the obstacle course at the U23 European Championships in Gävle in 8: 47.20 minutes.

In 2018 and 2019, Balabanow became Bulgarian champion in the 5000 meter run and in 2019 also over 1500 meters. He also won the obstacle course in 2018. Furthermore, in 2019 he became indoor champion in the 1,500 meter run .
