Julian Anthony Howard (born April 3, 1989 in Mannheim , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German athlete who specializes in the long jump . He also does sprints .
career path
In 2008 Julian Howard graduated from a sports high school in Mannheim and decided to study mechanical engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Due to doubts about the choice of course, he started a parallel course (mathematics and sport to become a teacher) from the winter semester 2012/13. In the meantime, he completed his mechanical engineering studies.
Athletic career
Julian Howard initially played football, but then wanted to practice an individual sport. Since he was noticed at the 1998 National Youth Games, he was invited to a trial training session, which he liked so much that he switched to athletics. It turned out that the long jump had the greatest development potential for him.
In 2006 Howard was German U18 long jump champion.
In 2008 he was able to qualify for the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz , where he finished 8th.
2009 Howard reached 3rd place in the German U23 championships .
This was followed by top places and title wins at Baden-Württemberg and southern German championships as well as the transition from the youth class to the active, which, like many athletes, was associated with various injuries.
In 2011 Howard was able to qualify for the U23 European Championships in Ostrava , but was eliminated in the qualification.
In 2012 he started a new beginning with the LG Region Karlsruhe and became German runner-up in the long jump at both the German indoor championships and the German championships .
In 2013 Howard set a personal best with a width of 8.07 m at the jumper meeting in Wesel.
In 2014 he became German indoor champion and came in 3rd place at the German championships .
In 2015 Howard jumped at the international indoor meeting in Karlsruhe with 8.04 m, the annual indoor performance. He became German indoor runner-up and again took 3rd place at the German championships .
In 2016, Howard jumped 8.03 m again at the indoor meeting in Karlsruhe, the indoor meeting of the year, and became German indoor runner-up
In 2017, Howard won the German Indoor Champion title again in Leipzig . At the indoor meeting in Karlsruhe on February 4th, he had already qualified with 7.97 m for the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade , where he took 5th place with the same distance. In northern France Lille was Howard team European champion , the long jump , he finished 10th. At the German Championships in Erfurt Howard won another championship title. In mid-July, Howard was nominated as a long jumper by the General German University Sports Association (adh) for the Summer Universiade in Taipei , where he was eliminated from the qualification without a valid attempt.
In 2018, Howard became German indoor champion with 7.74 m .
In 2009 Howard joined the national squad. He is now part of the perspective squad of the German Athletics Association (DLV) .
Club membership
Julian Howard has been working for the LG Region Karlsruhe since 2012 . Before that he was at MTG Mannheim and the Post Südstadt Karlsruhe .

Julien Howard's father is from Jamaica.
Honors
- For his sporting successes in 2017, Howard was awarded the golden pyramid at the Karlsruhe Sports Ball in April 2018 and was named Sportsman of the Year .
