The main character is Carag, a Woodwalker. Woodwalkers are people who have both a human form and an animal form and, with some practice, can switch between their forms at will. One of the highest precepts of the Woodwalkers is the secrecy of their existence from the "normal" people. Carag is a puma (or mountain lion ) converter. He grew up with his parents and sister Mia in the North American Rocky Mountains of the US state Wyoming . When he was about 11 years old, he decided to leave his family to live with the people. For this purpose he goes to the village of Jackson . There he is picked up by the authorities and taken to a foster family . She calls him Jay because he has stated that he doesn't remember anything. After a while, his skills are discovered by Clearwater High's headmistress, Lissa Clearwater, and after some discussion with his foster family, he can attend the boarding school she runs, which is specially designed for Woodwalkers.

With his classmates, especially Holly and Brandon, he has many adventures that represent the main plot of the books and build on each other to a grand finale.

More people

The foster family, the Ralstons, consists of his mother Anna, his father Donald, his brother Marlon and his sister Melody. These are not converters and also know nothing of Carag's abilities. Melody later learns that Carag is a Woodwalker after he rescued her from Andrew Milling and she recognized him as a cougar during the rescue operation.

Andrew Milling, also a Puma converter, is his first mentor and later greatest enemy.

At school, Carag shares a room with Brandon, a bison walker. His friends include Holly ( red squirrel ), Frankie ( otter ), Lou Ellwood ( elk ), Henry ( frog ), Dorian ( cat ), Shadow and Wing ( raven twins ), later also Tikaani (arctic wolf ) and the teacher James Bridger ( coyote ) .

The school is run by Lissa Clearwater ( Bald Eagle ). Other teachers include Lou's father, Isidore Ellwood ( wapiti ), Sarah Calloway ( rattlesnake ), Miss Parker ( pug ), Julian Goodfellow (triple converter: grizzly and wasp ) and Bill Brighteye ( wolf ). Julian Goodfellow even wants to kill Carag and is replaced by Carag's father.

review

The Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote in its feature section: "Woodwalkers is ideal, very well-written reading material for all male reading grudges and of course for girls too - funny, exciting and with a clear, not too complex plot.
