Qualifying standards for the track and field competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics
In contrast to the track and field competitions of the previous Olympic Games, a National Olympic Committee (NOC) can appoint up to three qualified athletes in each individual competition for the 2016 Olympic Games , if they meet the qualification standard during the specified period. A NOK can also nominate a maximum of four relays (4 × 100 m and 4 × 400 m for men and 4 × 100 m and 4 × 400 m for women). In addition, another athlete with a fulfilled DLV Olympic standard can be registered as a replacement in each individual discipline. NOKs without athletes with a fulfilled qualification standard can use a maximum of one female and male athlete in any competition.
The qualification standard must be achieved from May 1, 2015 to July 11, 2016 at an official IAAF competition. The qualification period for the 10,000 m, marathons, walking competitions and all-around competitions begins on January 1st, 2015.
A maximum of 16 nations can qualify for the relay competitions. The top 8 of each competition at the IAAF World Relays 2015 , which took place on May 2 and 3, 2015 in the Bahamas, secure a starting place for Rio 2016. The eight fastest nations according to the IAAF World Ranking List from 12. July 2016 will receive the remaining eight quota places.

Nomination in Germany
In Germany - in contrast to the IAAF standards and qualification periods - the DLV and DOSB have chosen a stricter procedure for the Olympic nomination. Originally, significantly stricter standards were set in some cases. In January 2016, most of these values were adapted to the IAAF standards. Exceptions are the walking competitions and the marathon. Among other things, the qualification periods are in some cases significantly shorter and mostly limited to 2016 and the open-air season. The 2016 German champions who have fulfilled the Olympic standard are directly nominated.
The current standards as well as those complying with the standards are continuously updated and published on the DLV homepage. In the table below, German athletes are identified as follows:
- 1 : DLV / DOSB standard met
- 2 : nominated
