Jackson "Jacko" Gill (born December 20, 1994 in Auckland ) is a New Zealand shot putter . At the 2010 Junior World Championships in Athletics , he won the gold medal in the shot put at the age of just 15 years and 213 days. He surpassed Usain Bolt , who was 15 years and 332 days old when he won the 200 m in 2002 . Gill went down in athletics history as the youngest junior world champion. In 2012 he successfully defended his title.

Career

In the run-up to the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, the 1.90 m tall athlete hit the 5 kg ball to 22.53 m at an event in Stockholm , which was a world record for 15 and 16 year olds with this weight. At the Youth Olympic Games, the 118 kg athlete improved the record by 7 cm to 22.60 m. On December 11, 2010, at the New Zealand School Championships, Gill set a junior world record: He hit the 5 kg ball to 23.86 m.

On March 26, 2011, at the New Zealand Championships, Gill hit the 6 kg ball to 21.34 m, which temporarily earned him 4th place on the junior all-time list in the IAAF's shot put .

On April 23, 2011, 16-year-old Gill set a new New Zealand record for adults with 20.01 m (7.26 kg ball). With this achievement, he met the standard for the 2011 World Athletics Championships . Due to the rules of the throwing disciplines, which state that athletes of his age are not allowed to start in the throwing disciplines, he could not participate. A request to the IAAF for a start permit for Gill was rejected. With the 20.01 m, Gill also met the B standard for the 2012 Summer Olympics . However, this distance was not considered a qualification, as the period for qualifying did not begin until May 1st. In addition, he did not reach the standard of the New Zealand Federation, which was set at 20.30 m. Nevertheless, he was still able to qualify for the Olympic Games in London, as he hit the 7.26 kg ball on December 5, 2011 on 20.38 m. In the same competition, Gill reached 22.31 m with the 6 kg ball, making it 2nd on the all-time best list. Gill is considered to be the youngest and lightest athlete who could push the 7.26 kg ball over 20 meters.

The IAAF Youth World Championships 2011 in the French Lille won Gill the gold medal by a margin of 4 meters and a new youth world record (24.35 m), which he improved to 24.45 m on 12 December 2011th

On August 18, 2013, Gill improved the world record with the 6 kg ball to 23.00 m in a competition in Auckland . He dethroned David Storl .

At the 2019 World Athletics Championships , he finished seventh.
