Gerhard Mayer (born May 20, 1980 in Vienna ) is an Austrian discus thrower who won the 2007 Universiade .

Mayer starts for SV Schwechat . From 2001 to 2011 he was Austrian national champion in discus throwing eleven times in a row. At the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg, he finished 15th. In 2007 he won the Universiade in Bangkok with 61.55 m. His best distance was in 2005 at 62.85 m. He came quite close to this distance in 2008 at the Halle Werfertage with 62.67 m and in Zeulenroda with 62.75 m. With these throws he qualified for the Olympic Games in Beijing , where he did not make it into the final as eighth of his qualifying group.

On May 5, 2009, he improved his record in Chula Vista to 64.16 m. At the subsequent World Championships in Berlin, he finished eighth in the final with 63.17 m. Since June 10, 2010 his best distance is 65.24 m, thrown in Rome. Gerhard Mayer is qualified and set up by the Austrian Athletics Association for the 2012 European Championships in Helsinki. He was already qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London from the previous year and has been nominated by the Austrian Olympic Committee. On his 3rd European Championship participation he made it to the finals for the first time, where he finished 8th with 62.85 m. Things didn't go as well for Mayer in London: With 60.81 m he was 24th in the qualification, well below his expectations.

On May 5, 2015 Mayer threw in Schwechat - after winter training in the hall and a favorable wind - 67.20 m. He exceeded his last best performance by almost two meters, reaching the limit of 66.00 m for the Rio 2016 Olympics and that for the 2015 World Championships.

Gerhard Mayer is 1.91 m tall and has a competition weight of 105 kg. His trainer is the javelin thrower Gregor Högler .

As a sports therapist, Gerhard Mayer currently looks after recreational and professional athletes with a holistic concept consisting of sports therapy, sports massage, strength training and individual performance development.
