Jan Kudlička (born April 29, 1988 in Opava , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech pole vaulter .
Athletic career
Kudlička gained his first international experience when he finished sixth at the World Youth Championships in Marrakech in 2005 with a skipped 5.05 m. The following year he reached fifth place at the Junior World Championships in Beijing with a height of 5.30 m and in 2007 he failed to qualify at the European Junior Championships in Hengelo . On August 25, he then improved the Czech junior record in the pole vault from 5.43 m to 5.61 m. However, this increase in performance came too late for a nomination for the World Championships in Osaka , which had started on the same day.
In the following season, Kudlička increased his best performance to 5.70 m and took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing, where he finished ninth with a crossed 5.45 m. At the U23 European Championships in Kaunas in 2009 he was eighth with a height of 5.15 m, while he failed in the qualification at the World Championships in Berlin with 5.40 m. At the European Championships in Barcelona in 2010 , he finished tenth with 5.60 m.
In the following years, Kudlička repeatedly achieved placements below the top ten at international championships, but without being able to advance into the medal ranks: He was ninth at the 2011 World Championships , sixth at the 2012 European Championships , eighth at the 2012 Olympic Games , and fifth at the European Indoor Championships 2013 and seventh at the 2013 World Championships . In the 2013 season he celebrated a few notable successes at athletics meetings such as his second place at the Areva meeting and the ISTAF Berlin as well as his third place at the Ostrava Golden Spike .
At the Indoor World Championships 2014 in Sopot, Poland, Kudlička won the bronze medal with a personal best of 5.80 m behind the Greek Konstandinos Filippidis and the German Malte Mohr . He won the same at the European Championships in Zurich with 5.70 m. In 2016 he won the silver medal at the European Championships in Amsterdam. 2017 missed Kudlička fourth barely a medal at the European Athletics Indoor Championships and missed at the World Championships in London at 5.45 m the finals . Also at the European Championships in Berlin the following year, he was eliminated with a 5.36 m qualification.
Kudlička is eight-time Czech champion in outdoor pole vault (2008, 2010–2014, 2017, 2019 and 2020 ) and six times indoors (2013, 2015–2018 and 2020).
