Sainte-Hélène is a French commune with 1,247 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Morbihan in the region of Brittany .

geography

The municipality is located in the southwest of the department, about ten kilometers east of the agglomeration of Lorient on the Ria d'Étel .

Sainte-Hélène borders the municipality of Merlevenez in the north, Nostang in the northeast , the Étel Bay in the southeast and south and Plouhinec in the west . The middle course of the Étel, known as Goah Guillerm , forms the border with the municipality of Nostang , before it merges into its ria . The place Sainte-Hélène is in the west of the municipality. The southeast protrudes as a peninsula into the Étel Bay.

history

Sainte-Hélène was founded as a municipality in 1790 and initially belonged to the canton of Kervignac. In 1801 the municipality was assigned to the canton of Port-Louis . As part of the German defense of the fortress Lorient during the Second World War, a battle took place in Sainte Hélène.

economy

As in other communities bordering the Ria d'Étel, oyster farming is also practiced off Sainte-Hélène .

traffic

The D158 connects Sainte-Hélène in the north with Nostang and the N165 expressway and in the south with Plouhinec and the D781 to the coastal towns.

Outside of school traffic and on market days in Hennebont there is no public service to Sainte-Hélène. The nearest regional train stations are in Hennebont, Brandérion and Landévant , with long-distance connections in Lorient and Auray . The closest airport is Lorient Bretagne Sud .
