Lalita Babar (born June 2, 1989 in Mohi , Maharashtra ) is an Indian athlete . She mainly takes part in the 3000 meter obstacle course and is the reigning Indian national record holder and reigning Asian champion in the same competition.
Babar was named Sports Person of the Year at the 2015 India Sports Awards, organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the Indian Ministry of Youth and Sports. She was recently honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award 2016 by the President of India for her contribution in the field of athletics. She is currently supported by the Anglian Medal Hunt Company.
Early life and junior career
Babar was born on June 2, 1989 in Mohi, a village in the Satara district in the Indian state of Maharashtra , to a farming family. She was born in an area that has been regularly hit by periods of drought , which has a negative impact on agriculture in the area.
Babar began her career in athletics as a long distance runner at a young age. She won her first gold medal in 2005 at the national U-20 championships in Pune .
She is currently supported by the Anglian Medal Hunt Company, a sports management company based in New Delhi .

In 2014, she became a hat-trick winner of the Mumbai Marathon . Determined to win a medal in all-around events like the Asian and Commonwealth Games , she switched to the 3,000-meter obstacle course after winning the marathon in January 2014. At the Asian Games 2014 in Incheon , South Korea , she won the bronze medal in the final with 9: 35.37 minutes. In doing so, she broke the national record held by Sudha Singh .
At the 2015 Asian Championships , Babar won the gold medal with a time of 9: 34.13 minutes, breaking her personal record, the national Indian record and the record of the games. She qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics . In addition, with her personal best of 2:38:21 h in the Mumbai Marathon 2015, she qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in the marathon . At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing , she broke the record again with a time of 9: 27.86 minutes in her qualifying run . As the first Indian woman to qualify for the steeplechase finals, she finished eighth in the final.
In April 2016 she beat the national record again with a time of 9: 27.09 minutes at the National Athletics Championships of the Federation Cup in New Delhi . At the Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro , she outbid this with a time of 9: 19.76 minutes in her run and qualified for the final. This made her the first Indian woman in 32 years to reach a final in any athletics competition. In the final, she finished 10th with a time of 9: 22.74 minutes.
