Damien Birkinhead (born April 8, 1993 in Geelong ) is an Australian athlete who specializes in the shot put.

Athletic career

Damien Birkinhead gained his first international experience at the 2009 World Youth Championships in Brixen , where he was eliminated with 17.99 m in qualification. In 2010 he took part in the first ever Youth Olympic Games in Singapore , where he finished fourth with 20.55 m. In 2012 he won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Barcelona with 21.14 m behind Jacko Gill from New Zealand and Krzysztof Brzozowski from Poland . In 2014 he took part in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow for the first time , where he finished fifth with 19.59 m.

In 2016 Birkinhead qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he finished tenth with 20.45 m in the final . In 2017, the qualification for the World Championships in London followed with 19.90 m. At the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham he finished 16th with 19.11 m. At the beginning of April he again took part in the Commonwealth Games in Goald Coast , Australia , where he finished fifth again with 20.77 m.

Between 2012 and 2018, Birkinhead became the Australian Shot Put Champion every year. He is a graduate of Deakin University in Geelong.
