Yarelys Barrios Castañeda (born July 12, 1983 in Pinar del Río ) is a former Cuban discus thrower .

Career

She played basketball in her childhood but switched to athletics at the age of 14 .

Her first international success was a victory at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in 2005. The following year she won the silver medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games. In 2007 she won the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro and the Universiade and won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Osaka with 63.90 meters.

In 2008 she improved her personal record to 66.13 m. With a further improved record of 66.40 m, she won gold at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara in 2011 . In 2012, she was able to win the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in London with 66.38 m after her Russian competitor Darja Pishchalnikova was subsequently disqualified for doping .

At the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, she also won the bronze medal with a width of 64.96 m.

Yarelis Barrios is 1.72 m tall and weighs 89 kg. She was trained as a physical education teacher at the Havana Sports University .

doping

On September 1, 2016, the International Olympic Committee announced that the banned diuretic acetazolamide had been discovered at Barrios as part of post-testing of doping samples from the 2008 Summer Olympics . As a result, the silver medal was revoked and the Ukrainian Olena Antonowa was awarded.
