Sophie McKinna (born August 31, 1994 in Great Yarmouth ) is a British shot putter .

Athletic career

Sophie McKinna gained her first experience in international competitions at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore , where she finished fifth with 15.14 m. The following year she won the silver medal at the World Youth Championships near Lille with 14.90 m and then won the Commonwealth Youth Games in Douglas with 14.75 m . In 2012 she was sixth at the Junior World Championships in Barcelona with 15.98 m and at the 2013 Junior European Athletics Championships in Rieti , she won the silver medal with 17.09 m. The following year, she first took part in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , where she finished fifth with 16.59 m. At the U23 European Championships in Tallinn 2015 she reached ninth place with 15.68 m. In 2018 she again took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast and was fifth again with 17.76 m. In August she reached the final at the European Championships in Berlin , where she finished seventh with 17.69 m. The following year she was eliminated from the qualification at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow with 17.18 m.

In 2019 McKinna became British outdoor champion, and in the same year she also secured the indoor title.
