Benn Harradine (born October 14, 1982 in Newcastle , New South Wales ) is a former Australian discus thrower and current holder of the Oceania record in this discipline (as of August 2018).
Athletic career
Benn Harradine gained his first international experience at the Commonwealth Games 2006 in Melbourne , where he finished eighth with 58.87 m. Two years later he qualified for the first time for the Olympic Games in Beijing , where he was eliminated with 58.55 m in the qualification , as well as at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin with 61.74 m. In 2010 Harradine was second at the Athletics Continental Cup in Split and won the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi with 65.45 m ahead of Indian Vikas Gowda and Carl Myerscough from England. At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu he was fifth with 64.77 m and at the 2012 Olympic Games in London he threw 63.59 m in the final , finishing ninth.
On May 10, 2013, Harradine set his fourth Oceania record in Townsville with 68.20 m. He qualified again for the World Championships in Moscow , where he did not qualify for the final with 59.68 m. In 2014 he took part again in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , Scotland , where he finished fourth with 61.91 m. At the World Championships in Beijing in 2015 he reached the final and was tenth there with 62.05 m. In 2016 he took part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro for the third time . There he could not qualify for the final of the top twelve again with 60.85 m .
In 2017 he took part in a world championship in London for the last time and failed there with 60.95 m in qualification . In 2018 he took part in his fourth Commonwealth Games in his native Gold Coast . There he finished sixth in the final with 59.92 m. He then announced his resignation and hopes to be a coach at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 .
Harradine was the Australian discus thrower in 2007 and 2008 and between 2010 and 2012 and 2014. He is a sports graduate from the University of Newcastle . He is the sixth Native to date to represent Australia in an athletics event at the Olympics and the first in a throwing event.
