Mauricio Alexander Ortega Girón (born August 4, 1994 in Apartadó ) is a Colombian athlete who specializes in discus throwing.

Athletic career

Mauricio Ortega gained his first international experience in 2011 when he took fourth place with the 1.5 kg discus at the World Youth Championships near Lille with a width of 60.28 m. He then won the Junior South American Championships in Medellín with the 1.75 kg discus and threw there to 58.48 m. The following year he reached ninth place at the Junior World Championships in Barcelona with 57.50 m and then won the U23 South American Championships in São Paulo with the standard discus with 53.94 m. In 2010 and 2013 Caicedo was the Ecuadorian champion in discus throw. In 2013 he took part in the South American Championships in Cartagena for the first time , where he won the bronze medal behind Argentines Germán Lauro and Andrés Rossini with a width of 57.76 m , setting a new national junior record. He then won the silver medal at the Pan American Junior Championships in Medellín with 61.77 m with the easier discus and successfully defended his title at the South American Junior Championships in Resistencia with 62.78 m, thus setting a new national record. At the end of November he won the Juegos Bolivarianos in Trujillo , where he set a new national and player record with 59.67 m.

In 2014 he won the South American Games in Santiago de Chile with a width of 59.95 m, with which he was able to improve his national record and also the player record. He then finished fourth at the Ibero-American Championships in São Paulo with 59.10 m and defended his title at the U23 South American Championships in Montevideo with a new championship record of 60.46 m. He also won the silver medal behind Cuban Jorge Fernández in November at the Central America and Caribbean Games in Xalapa with a throw of 60.69 m . The following year he won the South American Championships in Lima for the first time with 61.36 m and then reached seventh place at the Pan American Games in Toronto with 61.33 m. In addition, he qualified for the first time for the World Championships in Beijing , where he immediately reached the final and ended up there with 62.01 m in eleventh place. In 2016 he improved in Jablonec nad Nisou to 65.84 m and thus qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he did not reach the final with 61.62 m . He then won again at the U23 South American Championships in Lima with a width of 57.60 m.

In 2017 he defended his title at the South American Championships in Luque and set a new championship record with 63.82 m. He received a bye for the World Championships in London , where he was eliminated with 62.97 m in qualification . The following year he won again in South America playing in Cochabamba with a new Games record of 62.10 meters and then also won in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla with a new national record of 66.30 meters. He also won the gold medal at the Ibero-American Championships in Trujillo with 60.49 m. In 2019 he celebrated his third triumph in a row at the South American Championships in Lima, where he threw the discus to 58.89 m. He then finished fifth at the Pan American Games there with 61.15 m and was eliminated from the qualification at the World Championships in Doha with 61.92 m . In 2020 he improved the South American record in Lovelhe first to 67.03 m and then in July to 70.29 m.
