Ronald Odair de Oliveira Julião (born June 16, 1985 in Caieiras ) is a Brazilian athlete who specializes in discus throwing, but has also been successful in the shot put .

Athletic career

Ronald Julião gained his first international experience in 2002, when he won the bronze medal with a 5 kg ball at the South American Athletics Championships in Asunción with a width of 16.80 m. The following year he won the silver medal at the Junior South American Championships in Guayaquil with 56.36 with the lighter disc and finished sixth in the shot put with 16.83 m. He then reached fourth place in the discus throw at the Pan American Junior Championships in Bridgetown with 54.93 m and was eleventh with the ball with 16.29 m. In 2005 he took part in the South American Championships in Cali for the first time , where he achieved sixth place in the shot put with 16.97 m and won the bronze medal behind the Argentines Jorge Balliengo and Marcelo Pugliese with the discus with a width of 56.51 m . The following year he reached eighth place in the shot put at the Ibero-American Championships in Ponce with 16.89 m and won the bronze medal in the discus competition with 52.36 m behind the Argentine Balliengo and Héctor Hurtado from Venezuela. Then he secured the silver medal behind Balliengo at the South American Championships in Tunja with 57.02 m and also competed in the shot put, where he threw 15.95 m out of competition. He then won the bronze medal in the shot put at the Jogos da Lusofonia in Macau with 16.10 m behind the Portuguese Marco Fortes and his compatriot Gustavo Mendonça . At the U23 South American Championships, which were held in the course of the South American Games in Buenos Aires in 2006 , he won the silver medal in the discus throw with 55.13 m.

In 2007 he finished fifth at the South American Athletics Championships in São Paulo in the shot put with 17.81 m and again won the silver medal in the discus competition with 56.53 m, this time behind the Argentine Germán Lauro . He then took part in the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro for the first time and came there with a push of 17.31 m in tenth place with the ball and with the discus he was sixth with 54.36 m. The following year he won the Ibero-American Championships in Iquique with 56.77 m, the bronze medal behind the Argentine Balliengo and Pedro José Cuesta from Spain. He also achieved sixth place in the shot put with 17.64 m. In 2009 he won the silver medal in the shot put behind Lauro at the South American Championships in Lima with 18.19 m and in the discus throw he won the bronze medal behind Lauro and Balliengo with 54.97 m. He then secured the bronze medal in the shot put at the Jogos da Lusofonia in Lisbon with 17.63 m behind the Portuguese Fortes and compatriot Mendonça. In 2010 he finished sixth in the shot put at the Ibero-American Championships in San Fernando with 18.57 m and fifth with the discus with 57.91 m.

In 2011 he won the South American Championships in Buenos Aires with a new championship record of 62.72 m in the discus throw and took fourth place with the ball with a width of 17.88 m. He then took part in the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen , where he improved the Brazilian record in the discus throw to 63.30 m, with which he won the bronze medal behind the Estonian Märt Israel and Przemysław Czajkowski from Poland and in the shot put he was also given a new national record 18.78 m ninth. He then won at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara with 61.70 m, the bronze medal behind the Cubans Jorge Fernández and Jarred Rome from the United States and finished ninth in the shot put with 17.94 m. The following year he won the Ibero-American Championships in Barquisimeto with 61.67 m, the silver medal behind the Argentine Lauro and also qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in London , where he did not reach the final with 56.20 m reached.

In 2013 he again took part in the student world games in Kazan and this time won with a width of 63.54 m and finished eleventh in the shot put with 17.47 m. He then took part in the World Championships in Moscow , but retired there with 59.36 m in qualification. Previously, he set a new national record in San Diego with 65.55 m. In the following year he won the silver medal behind Colombian Mauricio Ortega at the South American Games in Santiago de Chile with 59.12 m , before he won bronze at the Ibero-American Championships in São Paulo with 59.75 m behind Argentine Lauro and compatriot Felipe Lorenzon won. Also at the Pan American Sports Festival in Mexico City , he won the bronze medal with 59.40 m behind the Cuban Fernández and Jared Schuurmans from the United States. 2015 he won at the South American Championships in Lima with 59.80 m silver medal behind the Colombians Ortega and also in the Pan American Games in Toronto he won with 64.65 meters silver medal behind the Jamaican Fedrick Dacres , before at the World Championships in Beijing with 61.02 m eliminated in qualification . At the beginning of October he finished tenth at the Military World Games in Mungyeon, South Korea, with 15.10 m in the shot put and ninth with the discus with a width of 56.88 m. In 2016 he won the Ibero-American Championships in São Paulo with a throw of 59.56 m and in 2017 he was fourth at the South American Championships in Luque with 55.89 m.

From 2005 to 2007, 2009 and from 2012 to 2014 Julião was Brazilian champion in discus throwing and in 2008 and 2009 in shot put.
