The U20 South American Athletics Championships (until 2015 Junior South American Championships ) are athletics competitions that are held every two years by the South American continental association Confederación Sudamericana de Atletismo (CONSUDATLE) and have also been held annually in the meantime. The first championships were held in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires in 1959 , making South America the first continent to host junior and youth athletics competitions. Until 1964 the competitions were only for men and only in 1966 women were allowed to take part in individual competitions. By far the most successful nation is Brazil, followed by Argentina and Chile.
