Cubatão is an industrial city in the Brazilian state of São Paulo . Cubatão is part of the metropolitan region of Baixada Santista around the port city of Santos, which is just under 15 km southeast . The distance to the state capital São Paulo is around 50 km. According to official estimates, the municipality had around 130,000 inhabitants in an area of 142 km² in 2018, which corresponds to a population density of 830 people per square kilometer.
The city is home to, for example, steel and chemical industries as well as oil refineries. By the 1980s, Cubatão had earned a reputation as one of the most heavily industrialized cities in the world.
