Praia Grande , in English "Big Beach", is a city in the Brazilian state of São Paulo with around 320,000 inhabitants (as of 2018) on an area of ​​149 km². This results in a population density of 1,646 inhabitants / km². Located about 84 km from the capital São Paulo , it is part of the metropolitan area around the port city of Santos , Baixada Santista . Praia Grande has the official status of a spa, an Estância Balneária .

The city is bordered to the north by São Bernardo do Campo , São Vicente in the Northeast, Mongaguá in the West and São Paulo in the northwest. The eastern and southern borders of the city form the coast to the Atlantic Ocean .

Tourism dominates economically, but Praia Grande primarily serves as a sleeping city in the region.
