Itanhaém (pronunciation: "Itanja-uhh", listening to audio) is a community on the coast of the Brazilian state of São Paulo . The city is part of the metropolitan region of Baixada Santista around the port city of Santos, which is around 55 km to the east . The distance to the state capital São Paulo is around 75 km. Itanhaém has 96,222 inhabitants (2015) on an area of 599 km² - which results in a population density of 161 people per km².
The municipality has the official status of a spa, an Estância balneária . The economy is determined by tourism. Numerous beaches attract visitors, especially from the state capital São Paulo with its more than 10 million people. In the 1970s in particular, it was fashionable to take a vacation in Itanhaém, whereas today Guarujá , located further east, is more favored.
In the hilly hinterland of the municipality, the Atlantic rainforest, the Mata Atlântica, dominates . The largest river is the Rio Itanhaém.
The island Queimada Grande and its small side island Queimada Pequena also belong to the municipality .
